Box Office Results: Tyler Perry does it again!

Studio Estimates for Feb. 20-22:

1.  Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail – $41 million
2.  Taken – $11.4 million
3.  Coraline – $11 million
4.  He’s Just Not That Into You – $8.5 million
5.  Slumdog Millionaire – $8 million

The Oscar weekend box office was quite bizarre, especially to us with our poor predictions.  The moral of this story goes, Tyler Perry is a box office champion.  He proves it time and time again.  It doesn’t matter if his films are released in 1,000 less theaters than other new releases (the reason I predicted a lower gross)… his movies simply make a lot of money.  We all knew he was going to take the top spot, but $41 million?  That exceeded our guesses.

We all had Friday the 13th to continue strong, but it didn’t.  I guess since it was a Friday the 20th, no one cared about this slasher remake.  Jason Voorhees didn’t crack the Top 5 (#6 with $7.8 million).  I was the only one to guess Coraline to stay in the Top 5, while none of us predicted Slumdog Millionaire to storm into the #5 spot with $8 million.

Okay, we’ll try to do better with our new predictions on Friday when two new movies come out:  one for action/video game fans in Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li… and one for those 12-year-old girls in Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience.

There is no way people actually go to see the new street fighter movie. It hasnt been advertised well at all. Jonas will be sold out….which is very depressing indeed.
