Studio Estimates for Feb. 12-14:
1. Valentine’s Day – $52.4 million
2. Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief – $31.1 million
3. The Wolfman – $30.6 million
4. Avatar – $22 million
5. Dear John – $15.3 million
Love was in the air this weekend as Valentine’s Day exceeded expectations grossing $52.4 million, benefitting from the couples’ dinner and a movie plans. Despite negative reviews, the romantic-comedy during Valentine’s Day still holds as a strong formula for success. I’m sure it doesn’t hurt that there are a dozen plus stars in the film as well.
Coming in the runner-up spot was the adaptation of the children’s book, The Lightning Thief ($31.1 million). The family-friendly film barely edged out the other new release of the weekend, The Wolfman ($30.6 million).
And rounding out the Top 5 was Avatar ($22 million) and Dear John ($15.3 million).
Check back on Friday for the new predictions when a film I’ve been patiently waiting for hits the theaters: Shutter Island starring Leonardo DiCaprio.
