Studio Estimates for Jan. 29-31:
1. Avatar – $30 million
2. Edge of Darkness – $17.1 million
3. When in Rome – $12.1 million
4. The Tooth Fairy – $10 million

For the seventh straight weekend, Avatar topped the box office with $30 million, pulling its record-breaking worldwide gross to over $2 billion. Yes, the controversies about tickets sold and ticket prices will always be an issue for Avatar as the highest grossing movie ever, but who cares anymore? Records are meant to be broken. Avatar has done it worldwide and is about to do it domestically. Congratulations.
Mel Gibson’s Edge of Darkness grossed $17.1 million, which was good enough for the runner-up spot in the box office. Meanwhile, the other new release When in Rome placed third with $12.1 million.
Landing fourth place was The Tooth Fairy with $10 million and rounding out the Top 5 was The Book of Eli with $8.8 million.
Check back on Friday for the new predictions when two new releases come out: Another Nicholas Sparks adaptation in Dear John and the John Travolta action/thriller Swordfish From Paris with Love.
