Box Office Results: Avatar still on top for fourth weekend

Studio Estimates for Jan. 8-10:

1.  Avatar – $48.5 million
2.  Sherlock Holmes – $16.6 million
3.  Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel – $16.3 million
4.  Daybreakers – $15 million
5.  It’s Complicated – $11 million

6.  Leap Year – $9.2 million
9.  Youth in Revolt – $7 million

Avatar has officially became the top grossing film of 2009, surpassing Transformers 2 ($402 million) with a $48.5 million weekend bringing it’s domestic total to $429 million.  The total also brings Avatar to the 7th highest gross of all-time, just past Dead Man’s Chest and on its way to pass The Phantom Menace. 

In other box office news, Sherlock Holmes ($16.6 million) and Alvin and the Chipmunks ($16.3 million) retained their number 2 and 3 spots.  The vampire thriller Daybreakers debuted at #4 with $15 million, while It’s Complicated landed the fifth spot with $11 million. 

As for the other two new releases:  Leap Year grossed $9.2 million and Youth in Revolt grossed $7 million.

Check back on Friday for the new predictions when two new releases and one expanded release hit the theaters:  Denzel Washington’s The Book of Eli, The Spy Next Door, and Peter Jackson’s The Lovely Bones.
