Studio Estimates for Oct. 2-4:
1. Zombieland – $25 million
2. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs – $16.7 million
3. Toy Story/ Toy Story 2 – $12.5 million
4. The Invention of Lying – $7.4 million
5. Surrogates – $7.3 million
6. Whip It – $4.9 million
Who says that the horror/comedy genre can’t make the big bucks? That was one reason people said why Jennifer’s Body bombed at the box office, but here we had Zombieland top the charts with $25 million. So what’s the deal? Maybe zombies are just more bankable than demon/cheerleaders?
Runner-up in the box office was Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs with $16.7 million during its third weekend since release. I’m surprised it was able to continue its success during the release of the Toy Story 3-D double feature, which landed the third spot with $12.5 million.
Rounding out the Top 5 were the Ricky Gervais comedy, The Invention of Lying that made $7.4 million and Surrogates with $7.3 million. Drew Barrymore’s Whip It ranked sixth with $4.9 million.
Check out on Friday for our new predictions when only one new release hits the theaters: the romantic comedy Couples Retreat.
