Box Office Predictions (August 7-9)

First I just want to thank Sheehan for taking over the blog, including the box office predictions, when I was away last weekend.  Good job buddy!

Now to the good stuff.  There are three new releases this weekend, the most notable being G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.  Will it repeat the success that Transformers had back in 2007?  I don’t think so, but because this is really the only big summer-blockbuster film of the weekend, it’ll most likely take the top spot at the box office.  How much though?  That’s hard to say.  It seems like one of those films that can easily gross over $60 million its opening weekend, but with a relatively unknown cast and mixed reviews (leaning towards the negative side), could this movie be a major flop?

Next, the Steve Zahn and Milla Jovovich honeymoon-horror film, A Perfect Getaway.  Even though this might be the only horror movie right now, I can’t see too many people (including horror junkies) going to see this one.  I might be wrong, but the crowd that would usually go see a movie like A Perfect Getaway will probably end up seeing G.I. Joe this weekend.

Finally, the culinary dramedy Julie & Julia starring two very talented actresses, Meryl Streep and Amy Adams round out the new releases.  This film certainly could get lost underneath all the bigger, louder, and funnier films of the summer but it’s hard to bet against Meryl Streep.  Adults looking for something a bit quieter and more sincere will flock to this film this weekend, but opening in about 2,300 screens, could it really compete with the rest?
