Box Office Predictions (May 15-17)

angelsdemons

Seems like this is going to be a real quick post since there’s only one new release of the weekend, which is Angels & Demons (the prequel to The Da Vinci Code).  So Tom Hanks is back as Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon who goes on a wild goose hunt to try and save the lives of kidnapped Cardinals and Vatican City.  If Ron Howard sticks to the written material, Angels & Demons should be a much darker and action packed adventure than The Da Vinci Code.  Did you know this is Ron Howard’s first sequel?

Even though The Da Vinci Code was blasted by critics with an overwhelming amount of negative reviews, it still ended up grossing $753 million worldwide.  Will Angels & Demons have the same effect?  It still has the star-power from Tom Hanks and Ron Howard.  The novel is popular (not as much as The Da Vinci Code, but popular enough).  The subject matter hits on similar religious themes and conspiracies.  We’ll find out soon enough.

Here are our predictions…

My Predictions:

1.  Angels & Demons – $54 million
2.  Star Trek – $42 million
3.  X-Men Origins: Wolverine – $12 million
4.  Ghosts of Girlfriends Past – $6 million
5.  Obsessed – $4 million

Chris’ Predictions:

1.  Angels & Demons – $50 million
2.  Star Trek – $23 million
3.  X-Men Origins: Wolverine – $18 million
4.  Ghosts of Girlfriends Past – $8 million
5.  Obsessed – $4 million

Phil’s Predictions:

1.  Angels & Demons – $50 million
2.  Star Trek – $30 million
3.  X-Men Origins: Wolverine – $13 million
4.  Ghosts of Girlfriends Past – $5 million
5.  Obsessed – $3 million

Sheehan’s Predictions:

1.  Angels & Demons – $50 million
2.  Star Trek – $45 million
3.  X-Men Origins: Wolverine – $15 million
4.  Ghosts of Girlfriends Past – $7 million
5.  17 Again – $5 million

Well with only one new release each of the past 3 months, our predictions are very similar.  Then again, it seems everyone on the Predictions Panel played their guesses safe.  We think Angels & Demons will take the box office crown over last week’s champion Star Trek.  Our range for Angels & Demons is $50-$54 million.  Aside from that, our Top 5’s all look identical aside from Sheehan throwing in 17 Again in the #5 spot.

Check back on Monday for the box office results.

One Response to Box Office Predictions (May 15-17)

  1. Danielle says:

I was really disappointed in the Da Vinci Code movie, which makes me hesitant to see Angels and Demons. Despite all the criticism, I generally enjoyed the books, so it was sad that the movie ruined it. So I’m rather skeptical to go see the prequel. Star Trek instead?
