Box Office Predictions (May 8-10)

Can you smell the summer in the air?  Okay, maybe not yet because all we’ve been getting in New Jersey is rain, rain, and more rain but atleast the summer movie season is in full swing.  Last weekend, X-Men Origins: Wolverine grossed over $85 million that exceeded the studio’s expectations and was in a virtual tie with X-2 as the second biggest opening weekend for the X-Men franchise (only behind X-Men: The Last Stand’s $102 million opening).

So what’s in store for this weekend?  How about another franchise prequel?  J.J. Abrams’ reboot of Star Trek is major wide release of the weekend, opening in 3,849 theaters across the nation.  Reboots are all the rage just like how Casino Royale did for James Bond.  Star Trek has been around for decades and it’s a good time to give the franchise a face-lift after the disaster of 2002’s Nemesis.  Are there still any Star Trek fans bet.  I definitely think so, but at this time they have to be aging, no?  What will those trekkies think of this new, bold, and action-packed version of Star Trek?

In addition to Star Trek, there is another new release this weekend, Next Day Air.  This is an R-rated comedy about criminals trying to sell a shipment of cocaine that was accidentally delivered to them.  Only opening in about 1,000 theaters, it might be able to squeak into the Top 5 but don’t be surprised if it doesn’t.

Here are our predictions:

My Predictions:

1.  Star Trek – $70 million
2.  X-Men Origins: Wolverine – $33 million
3.  Ghosts of Girlfriends Past – $8 million
4.  Obsessed – $5 million
5.  Next Day Air – $4 million

Phil’s Predictions:

1.  Star Trek – $90 million
2.  X-Men Origins: Wolverine – $40 million
3.  Ghosts of Girlfriends Past – $6 million
4.  Obsessed – $5 million
5.  Next Day Air – $5 million

Sheehan’s Predictions:

1.  Star Trek – $77 million
2.  X-Men Origins: Wolverine – $35 million
3.  Next Day Air – $15 million
4.  Obsessed – $9 million
5.  17 Again – $7 million

Chris was unable to submit his predictions in time.  The Predictions Panel’s consensus is that Star Trek will top the box office with a huge gross, our range is $70-$90 million.  Also, X-Men Origins: Wolverine will make between $30-$40 million, good enough for the #2 spot.  My and Phil’s predictions are very similar, while Sheehan was bold to predict an enormous opening weekend for Next Day Air ($15 million in merely 1,000 theaters would be quite a pta).

Check back on Monday for the box office results.
