Watchmen dominated the box office last weekend and it seemed wise for all the other major studios to stay clear from new releases. This weekend there are three new releases that range from horror to comedy to family adventure. What film will win the top spot?
First, the horror movie. Will this Friday the 13th give The Last House on the Left the results that Jason Voorhees received? Maybe… maybe not. One thing’s for sure, horror films have been quite surprising this year with hits like The Unborn, My Bloody Valentine, and Friday the 13th. In 2,400 theaters this weekend, The Last House on the Left is the movie to catch if you’re in for a scare.
Next, the comedy, Miss March. Starring… umm, no one? Well Raquel Alessi is ‘Miss March’ in the film, so I guess she’s the only name worth mentioning… heck I might get the DVD just for her personally. Besides that, I don’t see any reason that this R-rated sex comedy will make a serious dent in the box office.
Finally, the family adventure, Race to Witch Mountain. Dwayne Johnson returns to Disney after the success of The Game Plan to star as a cab driver who picks up a pair of teens with powers. Usually, family films do well in the box office although the Jonas Brothers have just flopped. Still, Race to Witch Mountain has a good shot at topping the box office this weekend especially playing in over 3,100 theaters.
So can any of these films knock off Watchmen from the #1 spot? Here are our predictions…
1. Race to Witch Mountain – $30 million
2. Watchmen – $23 million
3. Last House on the Left – $14 million
4. Taken – $5 million
5. Miss March – $5 million
1. Watchmen – $30 million
2. Miss March – $20 million
3. Last House on the Left – $12 million

2. Watchmen – $25 million
3. The Last House on the Left – $13 million
4. Miss March – $10 million

1. Watchmen – $25 million
2. Race to Witch Mountain – $22 million
3. Miss March – $13 million

The Predictions Panel is split this weekend between whether Watchmen or Race to Witch Mountain will top the box office… but we were in agreement that Watchmen should gross a decent second week total. Our range for Watchmen is $23-$30 million. Will that be enough to top Race to Witch Mountain. Aside from Chris’ low prediction of Witch Mountain ($10 million), the rest of us gave the film a range from $22-$35 million.
We also split about what film is going to sneak into the Top 5 between Madea Goes to Jail or Taken. And finally we all have the same guess of how Last House on the Left will gross, $11-$14 million range.
Let’s see how our predictions hold up. Check back Monday for the results.
