Studio Estimates for March 6-8:
1. Watchmen – $55.7 million
2. Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail – $8.8 million
3. Taken – $7.5 million
4. Slumdog Millionaire – $6.9 million
5. Paul Blart: Mall Cop – $4.2 million
Like no surprise, Watchmen took the box office crown this past weekend and also totaled the biggest opening of 2009 thus far with an estimated $55.7 million. The estimated gross would put it as the 6th all-time best R-rated opening weekend, just behind Sex and the City. My and Chris’s predictions were the closest with our Watchmen guesses, though he’d argue the Price is Right rule and say he won. Phil underestimated the hype of Watchmen while Sheehan’s bold prediction was way off. Sure, Watchmen didn’t have any competition but this is still pretty impressive.
For the rest of the box office, the Jonas Brothers flop again! In its second weekend, the tween pop stars dropped 78% and grossed a lousy $2.8 million, good enough for a #9 ranking. With Madea Goes to Jail, Taken, and Slumdog Millionaire doing what they were expected, the only surprise inclusion of the Top 5 was the staying power of Paul Blart: Mall Cop, that was able to snatch the #5 spot with $4.2 million. In its 8-week run, Mall Cop has grossed over $133 million. Not too shabby.
Let’s see if any of new releases can bump Watchmen off the top spot. This weekend’s movies are: The Last House on the Left, Miss March, and race to Witch Mountain.
Check back Friday for our predictions.
