Box Office Prediction (March 6-8)

watchmen_poster

It’s March!  I’m excited because this month actually looks somewhat decent in movie releases for this year.  Usually, March is the post-Oscar month when garbage makes its way to the theaters… which actually might stay true but at least my expectations are a bit higher.

My excitement starts with the highly anticipated, hugely popular, screen adaptation of Alan Moore’s graphic novel titled, Watchmen.  I’m sure you’ve heard about it, through the court hearings between the studios and how this film has been in the making for over 20 years, but since it had the reputation of being “unfilmable” it’s taken this long.  Well here it is.  The only wide new release of the weekend… I’m sure it won’t follow the Jonas Brothers’ footsteps by not snatching the #1 spot in the box office.  The question is… how much will it make?

Zack Snyder’s last film, 300, grossed $70 million its opening weekend.  That seems to be the mark Watchmen is aiming for.  Some believe it’ll underachieve while others say it has a shot at $100 million.

Here is what we think…

My Predictions:

1.  Watchmen – $65 million
2.  Slumdog Millionaire – $10 million
3.  Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail – $9 million
4.  Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience – $8 million
5.  Taken – $5 million

Chris’s Predictions:

1.  Watchmen – $45 million
2.  Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail – $12 million
3.  Jonas Brothers: 3D Concert Experience – $9 million
4.  Taken – $7 million
5.  Slumdog Millionaire – $6 million

Phil’s Predictions:

1. Watchmen – $35 million
2. Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail – $10 million
3. Slumdog Millionaire – $9 million
4. Jonas Brothers: 3D Concert Experience – $6 million
5. Taken – $4 million

Sheehan’s Predictions:

1.  Watchmen – $99 million
2.  Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail – $13 million
3.  Slumdog Millionaire – $9 million
4.  Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience – $8 million
5.  Taken – $6 million

It’s obvious that Watchmen will capture the box office crown this weekend, but the question still remains: how much will it make?  It’s a real guessing game.  The R-rating should suggest a lower gross than some superhero blockbusters like Iron Man and The Dark Knight, but at the same time R-rated films like 300 and The Matrix proves they can still gross huge amounts of money.  But will anyone but fans of the graphic novel see this movie this weekend?  From just word of mouth around friends and co-workers, the answer is yes.  And with a number of IMAX showings charging over $15 and selling out, I expect the totals to be pretty high.

Our predictions prove the range from what the Watchmen can make and how it’s so unpredictable.  Our range is from $35-$99 million.  Sheehan thinks Watchmen will break the all-time record for an opening weekend from an R-rated film (held by the sequel to The Matrix) with a whopping $99 million… while the rest of us believe it’ll lie in the ballpark of $35-$65 million.  Still, that’s a $30 million range, so who knows.  The rest of the box office isn’t important.  Madea, Slumdog, Jonas, and Taken should fill in the rest of the Top 5.

Well I know I’m going to see Watchmen this weekend.  Let’s see how our predictions hold up.  Check back Monday for the results.
