Box Office Predictions (Feb. 20-22)

Because of my laziness, Chris has written this week’s box office predictions post.  Thanks Buddy!

And now the big weekend has arrived.  Well, no, maybe not box office-wise, but finally the Oscars are here.  This Sunday marks the 81st Annual Academy Awards presentation.  With a mix of givens (Picture/Lead Actress/Supporting Actor), close races (Lead Actor/Supporting Actress), and mystery presenters, this year’s broadcast should prove to be a rather entertaining one.  The big question I have going in is:  How well will Hugh Jackman be as the host?

Anyway, this weekend brings us two new movies from the comedy genre.  First, is the latest installment from Tyler Perry, Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail.  Following in the footsteps of Martin Lawrence, Tyler Perry stars in this offshoot comedy about an elderly black woman (played by Perry himself) who is sent to jail and meets up a crazy cast of characters.  This isn’t exactly my cup of tea, but, as Perry has shown in the past, his movies are known to make a rather successful splash in the box office.  This feature should be no different.

Second on the list is Fired Up, starring Nicholas D’Agosto and Shawn Colfax.  This is your typical teen comedy in which two star football jocks ditch training camp to join a cheerleader camp.  This movie won’t be winning any awards come Oscar time next year, but I’m sure there are enough kids out there looking for a good laugh to boost this movie’s box office performance up.

Here are our predictions…

My (Chris) Predictions:

1.  Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail – $25 million
2.  Friday the 13th – $20 million
3.  Confessions of a Shopaholic – $16 million
4.  He’s Just Not That Into You – $15 million
5.  Taken – $14 million

Rob’s Predictions:

1.  Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail – $24 million
2.  Friday the 13th – $18 million
3.  Taken – $14 million
4.  He’s Just Not That Into You – $12 million
5.  Coraline – $10 million

Phil’s Predictions:

1.  Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail – $35 million
2.  Friday the 13th – $20 million
3.  Taken – $13 million
4.  He’s Just Not That Into You – $9 million
5.  Fired Up – $9 million

We all seem to be in agreement that Tyler Perry will take the crown this weekend.  We also all agree that Friday the 13th will continue to be a success coming in at the 2-spot.  From there, Phil and Rob follow a similar path while I veer off and continue to have faith in the chick flicks that are out right now.  We all feel Taken is still a top 5 movie, while Phil is the only one who believes Fired Up can crack one of the top spots this week.

As always, check back Monday for the results.
