Box Office Predictions (Feb. 13-15)

friday13th shopaholic

What’s in store for us this Valentine’s Day Weekend?  Well we got a remake of a horror classic, a crime thriller, and a ditzy romantic comedy about a woman with a shopping addiction.  Yeah, it’s February… all the Oscar films are nearing the end of their run and now this is the time for fillers to take center stage until the summer blockbusters arrive in May (of course with a few surprises).

First on the list, Friday the 13th (2009)… released on Friday the 13th!  How convenient.  Is there nothing like Hollywood remaking classics over and over again until every single penny is milked from a franchise?  I’m not a big fan of the horror genre for this particular reason, but there’s no doubt that horror is one of the most profitable type of movies.  Therefore, I expect Friday the 13th to do very well this weekend.

Next, The International starring Clive Owen and Naomi Watts.  Directed by Tom Tykwer (Run Lola Run), this film seems to have the chops to become a fantastic film… but then why does it feel like a failure?  There’s nothing especially appealing about this crime drama… I don’t expect this film to make the Top 5.

Finally, a perfect chick flick for those groups of girls flocking to the theaters this weekend, Confessions of a Shopaholic.  Starring the very likable Isla Fisher as a woman with a shopping addiction, this is the ideal time for a film like this to debut.  Facing off directly against He’s Just Not That Into You, they should be battling it out for a Top 3 spot this weekend.

Here are our predictions…

My Predictions:

1.  Friday the 13th – $28 million
2.  He’s Just Not That Into You – $20 million
3.  Confessions of a Shopaholic – $17 million
4.  Taken – $13 million
5.  Coraline – $11 million

Chris’ Predictions:

1.  He’s Just Not That Into You – $22 million
2.  Confessions of a Shopaholic – $20 million
3.  Taken – $15 million
4.  The International – $12 million
5.  Coraline – $10 million

For the most part, our predictions are similar besides our thoughts on Friday the 13th.  I feel that Jason Voorhees is a huge, bankable icon that will fill the theater seats even though this is the 12th installment of the franchise, while Chris doesn’t think it’ll crack the Top 5.  Also, Chris feels that the Valentine’s Day weekend will benefit the chick-flicks that are out, rewarding He’s Just Not That Into You for its second straight box office crown.

Check back on Monday for the results.
