To no surprise, Star Trek was the box office champion this Mother’s Day Weekend with an impressive $72.5 million (approx. $80 million if you count Thursday’s gross). In addition to the movie being a box office hit, it was a smash hit with the critics as well, receiving a 96% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 228 reviews. After the success of X-Men Origins: Wolverine last weekend, there was an announcement for a Deadpool spin-off sequel. Do I smell a Star Trek sequel in the near future?
As for the other new release this weekend, Next Day Air failed to make the Top 5. It placed #6 at the box office with only $4 million. The rest of the Top 5 that followed Star Trek were Wolverine, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, Obsessed, and 17 Again.
Check back on Friday when the summer blockbuster season continues with yet ANOTHER prequel, Angels & Demons starring Tom Hanks.
