The Golden Globes have lost its grip from being a decent Oscar precursor to simply being an awards show celebrating movies and television with the biggest stars the industry has to offer.  I mean, why else would they have separate award categories for drama and comedy/musical?  To have as many famous actors in the same room at the same time!

That being said, there are a few things to notice from the nominations.  For Best Picture – Drama, there’s no Milk or (surprisingly) no The Dark Knight.  If I had to pick a winner, I’d bet that the HFPA awards Slumdog Millionaire as the Best Picture.  Just a hunch.

This year’s Best Picture – Comedy/Musical is really full of weak movies.  The past two years you had some decent Oscar powerhouses in the Comedy/Musical category like Sweeney Todd, Juno, and Little Miss Sunshine.  This year the strongest movie is Happy-Go-Lucky, which isn’t really expected to make a run at Best Picture come February.

I guess the biggest shocker is how the HFPA barely acknowledged The Dark Knight.  Sure, they have Heath Ledger in for Best Supporting Actor… but that was it.  Snubbed for Best Picture, Screenplay, and Director… there was certainly no superhero love in the Globes.

So what does this all mean?  Basically nothing… and I don’t even care about the television awards because with The Academy Awards looming around the corner, that’s where all of my attention is.  Although the Globes’ Best Picture winners hasn’t matched up with The Academy’s since 2003 (The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King), the winner of the Globes Best Picture will most likely be a Best Picture nominee at the Oscars.  At least they didn’t have 7 Best Picture – Drama nominations this year (like last year… that was ridiculous).

But anyway it is a fun time and the biggest party in Hollywood every year (except for last year’s live press conference announcing the winners).  I’ll be looking forward to the Golden Globes on Sunday, January 11, 2009.
