Box Office Predictions (September 26-28)

September 26, 2008

The big opening film this weekend will be Shia LaBeouf’s action/thriller, Eagle Eye.  LaBeouf teams up again with D.J. Caruso hoping they can recapture the success they had with Disturbia.  There’s no doubt Eagle Eye will open at #1 in the box office this weekend… but how much will it make?  Also starring are Michelle Monoghan, Rosario Dawson, and Billy Bob Thornton.  Opening in over 3,000 locations, the question is whether or not Eagle Eye can top the $30 million mark.

While all of the guys and teenage girls flock to see Eagle Eye, there’s a chick-flick crashing into theaters this weekend, Nights in Rodanthe, starring Richard Gere and Diane Lane, based on a novel written by Nicholas Sparks (The Notebook, A Walk to Remember).  This film should see a decent opening from hardcore Sparks fans and the casual female movie watcher.

And then there’s the Spike Lee World War II film, Miracle at St. Anna.  Opening in a little less than 2,000 theaters, and with its 160-minute running time… this might be a tough sell.  Will people just be seeing it because of the Spike Lee name… or is anyone actually interested in the storyline of four African-American soldiers who… well I don’t really know what the plot is.  We’ll see how well it does.

Now here are our predictions…

Dan’s Predictions:

1.  Eagle Eye – $30 million
2.  Nights in Rodanthe – $12 million
3.  Lakeview Terrace – $8 million
4.  Burn After Reading – $6 million
5.  Miracle at St. Anna – $5 million

Phil’s Predictions:

1.  Eagle Eye – $20 million
2.  Nights In Rodanthe – $16 million
3.  Lakeview Terrace – $10 million
4.  Burn After Reading – $8 million
5.  Miracle at St. Anna – $8 million

My Predictions:

1.  Eagle Eye – $28 million
2.  Nights at Rodanthe – $16 million
3.  Lakeview Terrace – $8 million
4.  Miracle at St. Anna – $6 million
5.  Burn After Reading – $6 million

It’s not much of a brain-teaser this weekend.  All three of us picked the same five films, and only I have Miracle at St. Anna in the #4 spot and Burn After Reading in the #5 spot.  Our predictied grosses are very close as well.  I feel fairly confident that the box office will look almost exactly like our guesses.

Come back Monday to see how we did with our predictions.
