Studio Estimates for September 12-14, 2008:
1. Burn After Reading – $19.4 million
2. The Family That Preys – $18 million
3. Righteous Kill – $16.5 million
4. The Women – $10 million
5. The House Bunny – $4.3 million
Burn After Reading tops the weekend box office with approximately $19.4 million. Don’t think that mass acclaim and Oscars mean anything? Well, this is the biggest weekend opening ever for the Coen brothers.
The Family That Preys came in second with $18 million, followed by Righteous Kill with $16.5 million. As expected, the Top 3 films were very close throughout the weekend and because of those films the box office finally turned last weekend’s catastrophe around.
As for our predictions, it’s tough to pick a winner. Phil was bold enough to predict Burn After Reading as #1, but he failed to note Tyler Perry’s The Family That Preys in his Top 5. Even though he stressed that this weekend would bring in a lot of money, just because of excluding Tyler Perry he cannot win. Dan and I were both wrong with our top prediction, and we both put Burn After Reading in the #3 slot. No one picked all of the Top 5 movies, so now we have to focus on the grossing predictions where Dan out-guessed me with his on-the-dot The Family That Preys and Righteous Kill gross.
Check back on Friday for our next weekend’s predictions.
