Flight of the Conchords

Fifteen tracks off of their critically acclaimed HBO series, Flight of the Conchords flex their muscle as the funniest duo on the scene, not only in New Zealand, but in the States as well.  Featuring Bret and Jemaine, these songs are all remixed tracks that were showcased in the first season of their self-titled series.

It’s interesting to experience the Flight of the Conchords tri-fecta:  Listening to their songs from one of their stand-up comedy events, watching their songs from their TV-show, and listening to their songs from the album.  The songs from the show and the album are exactly the same, but still is a difference experience.  I watched the show first, so whenever I popped the album in my CD-player, I couldn’t help but vision the scene of the show whenever I listened to a song.  One of my favorites is “Leggy Blonde” sung by FotC and their manager Murray.  The song during the show played out like a music video, and I have to admit if I didn’t watch the show first, I would’ve had no clue what those sounds were during the interlude of the song (the rhythm was created by office supplies).  By having seen the show first, I don’t know if I would have that goofy smile on my face as much if I haven’t prior to listening to the tracks.

Every aspect of the tri-fecta has its advantages.  I feel their humor is best displayed while they’re doing stand-up, but their TV-show truly gives their songs life.  Listening to the album alone is like listening to the soundtrack of a musical… you can only fully enjoy it after you’ve seen the show.  Nonetheless, the songs on the album are catchy enough to stand alone on its own as tunes that anyone can get into, whether or not you know who these guys are.

Recommendation:  Listen to it… but after you watch the show.
