It’s Labor Day Weekend, which means it’s time for a shake-up in the box office. With FIVE new releases… yes count them: Traitor, Hamlet 2 (wider release), Babylon A.D, College, and Disaster Movie… if there’s one thing that’s certain about this weekend, it’s the uncertainty to predict the box office. Here’s how our predictions break down…
Dan’s Predictions:
1. Tropic Thunder – $13 m
2. Babylon A.D. – $11 m
3. The House Bunny – $10 m
4. Disaster Movie – $9 m
5. Death Race – $8 m
Phil’s Predictions:
1. Tropic Thunder – $14 m
2. Babylon A.D. – $14 m
3. Dark Knight – $9 m
4. Death Race – $8 m
5. Disaster Movie – $5 m
My Predictions:
1. Babylon A.D. – $21 m
2. Disaster Movie – $13 m
3. Tropic Thunder – $11 m
4. The House Bunny – $8 m
5. The Dark Knight – $7 m
Dan and Phil predict the positive word-of-mouth will carry Tropic Thunder to its third consecutive weekend at #1, while I predicted the new Vin Diesel action film, Babylon A.D. Aside from Babylon, the only other new release that we all predict will rank in on the Top 5 is Disaster Movie, though I’m saying it’s going to do a lot better than Dan and Phil think. None of us have Traitor (the Don Cheadle thriller), College, or Hamlet 2 on our Top 5. And finally, Dan and Phil seem to be in agreement that the Labor Day Weekend box office will be a weak one, while I say the Top 5 will gross approximately $60 million.
There are a lot of movies for the light-movie viewer, more known as the high school, Friday night movie crowd… such as Disaster Movie, College, The House Bunny, and Hamlet 2. Well, all the movies that are out are mainstream attempts for studios to make a little money, besides the dark and masterful The Dark Knight, and the satirical slapstick comedy Tropic Thunder.
We’ll have to see how our predictions hold up to the box office next week.
