I would’ve never thought that my first post in my blog that covers most entertainment would be about the stagehands’ strike on Broadway. Personally, I love going to Broadway shows… my favorites include Les Miserables and Spring Awakening… and I had a ticket for Wicked tomorrow, and just my luck they go on strike today. Now the strike didn’t cancel every Broadway show, but Wicked was one of the many that did go off. So excuse me if I blurt out some explicits as I write this during my rage.
So what’s the strike about? The stagehands picketed the streets of NYC over “work rules and staff requirements, particularly rules governing the expensive process of loading in a setting up a show. The producers want more flexibility in hiring; the stagehands don’t want to give up what they say are hard-won benefits without something in return.” (AP)
Okay… sounds good enough to strike for. Now let’s see how long it takes them and the League of American Theatres and Producers to figure things out.
Some Broadway shows are still performing since they’re separate from the Local One union. These shows include: Spelling Bee, Young Frankenstein, Mary Poppins, Xanadu, Mauritus, Pygmalion, The Ritz, and Cymbeline.
